We're Going on an Elf Hunt' by Class 4

We’re Going on an Elf Hunt!

On Monday, Class 4 came into school eagerly awaiting the challenge Jeff (our elf) normally sets us. Yet, when we entered the classroom we realised that Jeff was once again nowhere to be seen. This time, however, he had not even left us a note giving us clues to his whereabouts. Instead he asked us to create our own story about him to share with children in Class 1 and Class 2.

Therefore we decided that we needed to go on an elf hunt. We explored the book, ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ written by Michael Rosen who was the Children’s Laureate from 2007 to 2009. We explored:

  • The way it was structured and used a repetition.
  • The use of noun phrases and figurative language such as alliteration and onomatopoeia.
  • How it was written with an intended audience in mind which is reflected in the language used and the imagery created.

The children then went about drafting their own version about a hunt for our elf, Jeff.

Here are a few snippets from the stories that were written:

We're going on a elf hunt.

We're going to find a silly one.

What a chilly day!

We're not scared.

Uh-uh!

A river!

A chocolate delicious river!

We can't fly over it.

We have to stomp through it.

Splash squaph! Splash squaph!Splash squaph!

We're going on an elf hunt.

We're going to catch a cheeky one.

What a cold day!

We're not terrified

Uh-uh!

Snow.

Slippery sliding snow.

We can't go over it.

We can't go under it.

Oh no!

We've got to go through it.

Slip slop! Slip slop! Slip slop!

We're going on an elf hunt.

We're going to catch a crazy one.

What a snowy day.

We're not afraid.

Oh no!

A bubble gum puddle!

A blue bubble gum puddle.

We can't go over it we can't go under it.

We've got to go through it.

Gooey,gluey.

Gooey,gluey.

Once they had edited their work, they went about creating their own book. They thought hard about ensuring the illustrations in their books reflected the text and the journey being described. They sketched their illustrations lightly and then painted them using water colours. The children practised mixing secondary and tertiary colours as well as blending colours.

I have been so impressed with the amount of effort and skill which has gone into these books. Each child has really pushed themselves to produce work of which they can be proud.

Here are a few examples of the illustrations created:

Today the children had the opportunity to share their books with pupils from Class 1 and 2. They really enjoyed the opportunity to share their work.

Well done children. As ever, I am so impressed with your work ethic and your passion for learning!

“I was a bit nervous sharing my book but when I read to my partner at the end they said that they loved the polar bear in my story. I felt really good.” Issac

“I was kind of scared and I felt really happy when I did it because I have never read a book to someone and I have never made a book before.” Jake

“I enjoyed doing it but it was a bit overwhelming because it was actually my book I was reading rather than a different author. The children really enjoyed it and I am delighted that they did comment on it.” Molly

“It was happy reading my book to Freddy. He really liked it.” Eliza
