Volcanoes!

At the start of our Geography topic, the children were given the following image to engage their learning and to use this to generate questions:

Throughout our studies, the children have been focusing their learning towards the question: How dangerous are volcanoes? We have studied the structure, how they are formed, where they can be found in the world, and why some people would choose to leave by volcanoes. We have concluded our work by incorporating Design and Technology. Today they have used Papier-mâché techniques to begin the process of building their own volcano. When they have dried, they will then paint them before we set up a reconstruction of the Ring of Fire. Below you can find several photographs of the children preparing.

In our English lessons, we have been looking at the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the destruction of Pompeii. The children have already studied the structure of a volcano, as well as the many effects of a volcano eruption. They will be using this work to write a diary entry about a fictional evacuation of the city.
