Science walk in the woods

Classes 1 and 2 went for a ‘Science’ walk in the local woods on Thursday 30th March to make close observations of the different plants and animals we could see.

As scientists, we were able to:

·         Develop our observational skills using magnifiers

·         Identify and classify different insects and birds using classification sheets

·         Use our observations and knowledge to answer questions

The children used their 'white hat thinking' (what they knew) to help them organise pictures of their findings into tally charts and Carroll diagrams then use this information to help them answer questions.

Some of the questions we thought about were:

·         Why did the insects crawl quickly away once they were uncovered?

·         What were the birds doing that we saw flying around?

·         Why didn’t we see any amphibians or reptiles?

·         What evidence was there that squirrels lived in the area?
