A Review of Maths 2016-2017

At The Meadows, we aspire for our children to be successful mathematicians who have a passion for the subject and enjoy their learning. Over the course of the past year, we have continued to work hard to improve our provision of Maths across the school. Last year, our school improvement focus regarding maths has been to ensure that we are using and applying our maths skills in other subjects across the curriculum. In order to do this we have:

  • Provided pupils with more frequent opportunities of use maths in other subjects across the curriculum according to their milestone of learning.
  • Monitored the opportunities provided for children to use and apply their maths, ensuring that activities are purposeful.
  • Introduced the ‘Meadows Maths Challenge’, completed outside of the maths lesson, enabling children to steer their learning and research mathematical questions that have generated themselves and are interested in. We have tried to ensure these challenges are fun, engaging and challenging.
  • Increased pupil voice – providing children with frequent opportunities to share their opinion of our learning in maths as well as to take ownership of their learning.

 

In addition, we have also improved our maths by:

  • Held a parent survey regarding attitudes towards maths. This resulted in two parent workshops being run regarding calculating in key stage two as well as a maths family workshop where parents where able to learn alongside their child(ren) using Numicon.
  • Purchasing and using new maths challenges to develop ‘deep’ learners.
  • Monitored the quality of teaching and learning regularly to ensure that it is at least ‘good’ by observing teaching, scrutinising work books as well as talking to children about their learning in maths.

 

Whilst we recognise the progress we have made over the past 12 months, we also realise that we are still on our journey to improve maths in our school. One of the reasons for this is since the percentage of children reaching the expected standard in each year group across the school is less than in English, as highlighted by the key stage 1 and 2 SATs results. One reason for this, we feel, is that some children have gaps in their knowledge regarding numbers facts – they are not able to recall number facts quickly and this disadvantages them in timed tests.

 

In order to continue to improve, this year we will:

  1. Introduce new F.U.N Maths (Fluency and Understanding in Numbers) sessions, separate from the maths lesson, where children will be able to practise number facts frequently in a range of different contexts.
  2. Introduce new mental maths tests for y1-6 which will be tested twice each week.
  3. Change the maths homework so that it helps the children to practise their number facts and their arithmetic so that they can apply these skills in lessons, particularly when problem solving.
  4. Provide termly reports regarding your child recall of number.

 

I am looking forward to the changes being introduced and hope that they will indeed encourage and enable your child to be a successful mathematician – something that I believe every child has the potential to be with hard work and practise.
