Raising Money for the Charity Sanctus

Dear Parents,

Christmas time is nearly upon us. I’m sure you are all readying yourself for this busy time of year: decorating your houses and trees, helping Santa to purchase and wrap presents, planning what you will be eating on Christmas day etc.

At school, we are also preparing for the coming of Christmas: completing our units of work, assessing the children’s progress during this term, practising for the KS1 nativity, learning about advent etc. We are all very excited; we are particularly looking forward to spending time with our families in the comfort and protection of our safe homes, eating delicious food and opening exciting presents.

However, at The Meadows, we have also be thinking about those less fortunate that ourselves – those who are not looking forward to this time of year for many different reasons. For some, Christmas is an upsetting time of year, a lonely time of year, a time when people feel their most vulnerable.

For this reason, the school council has decided to offer our support to a local charity - Sanctus St Marks. This charity is based in Hanley and is a support group for refugees and people who are seeking asylum in the UK. They aim to support people, from all around the world, in a non- judgemental and safe environment. They help all people, from babies and children, to adults and the elderly. Twice a week, the charity opens its doors to people and provides:

  • English language and literacy skills.
  • Nutritional Support – providing food to those who have very little.
  • Toiletries
  • Emotional support
  • An opportunity to develop creative skills
  • Shelter

In order to support them, the school council has decided to:

  1. Raise money by holding a ‘Guess how many sweets in the jar’ game at Messy Christmas Crafts on Monday.
  2. Raise money by holding an own clothes day on Friday 16th December (Christmas themed). Pupils are all asked to bring in a donation of £1.
  3. Ask for donations of packs of pens and note pads. A collection box will be placed in school on Monday and will be around for the duration of the week for you, or your child, to drop off your donations.
  4. Make Christmas crackers, filled with sweets, which will be given to the children at Sanctus, along with the pens and pads donated, on Christmas day during their meal. This will be done during school time.

Please help us with our efforts – every bit of money raised will be going to support these vulnerable families. We aim to provide them with a glimmer of hope this Christmas time.
