D&T Workshops at Madeley High School

Our teacher, Mrs Kuffour, selected a group of pupils from our school to go down to the high school for some Design and Technology  sessions. The aim of the sessions were to help us to develop the characteristics of designers. The sessions were led by Mr Mayers, the head of D&T.

During the course of the sessions we got to drive a go cart that was timed around a track, we got on to computers and we designed multiple key rings using the laser cutter. It was an amazing experience to learn more about D&T and the machinery we will be using when we go to high school. Also, students from the high school helped such as Jacob Lovatt and other recommended pupils.

On the first week, we got to  drive the Goblin Car (go-kart) around an empty car park at the high school. Unfortunately, the car batteries, which powered the go-kart, had not been working properly until the end of the session. So, only Jacob Hawley got to ride it! Fortunately, one of the helpful assistants pushed the other children around the track so they still had fun. We learnt a lot about how the cart was designed, why it was designed that way and how it could be modified.

Luckily, on the second week the go-kart was working and we were able to enjoy racing around the track. We had to wear a helmet and gloves however because it was very fast and could go up to 30mph!

On the third week, we were able to use the computers at the high school to design our own key rings which were then made using the laser cutter.  Our key rings were sent to our school to give out.

A huge thank you to Mr Mayers for leading the sessions - we really enjoyed our time at the high school and are looking forward to coming next year!
