Drama Club Performance in Celebrations assembly

Last week in Drama Club, the children explored performance poetry. After we had played many games to warm up our voices and our bodies, we watched a video clip of the poet Michael Rosen performing his poem 'Chocolate Cake'. We explored:

  • His use of his voice (the tone, pitch and dynamics).
  • His use of actions to reflect the words spoken.
  • His use of pauses to build tension and excitement.

The children were then provided with a choice of different poems to perform such as:

'Gran can you rap?'

'On the Ning Nang Nong'

'The Jabberwocky'

'The Sound Collector'

'Cats'

Once they had gotten into groups and had selected a poem to explore, they rehearsed. They thought about the meaning of the poem, any particularly parts they wanted to emphasise and how they were going to speak the poem and act it out. They worked brilliantly together, arranging who would speak and perform which sections of the poem.

At the end of our session, all groups performed their poem. At the end, the children were able to vote for the performance they liked the most. The winners were Megan and Lottie with their performance of the poem, 'Cats' by Eleanor Farjeon.

Today, in Celebrations Assembly, Megan and Lottie had the opportunity to perform for the whole school. They were brilliant and certainly entertained and engaged Mrs Edwards, who we all know loves cats!

Well done children.

'I was quite nervous but I was also excited to perform. I felt like I could push myself to do it and improve my confidence.' Lottie

'I thought it was really funny and imaginative how they thought it up in only a couple of weeks. It was really good how they both told the story of the two cats that would sleep anywhere in the house for example in the window sill and on the edge of a chair.' Dan

'I though their performance was really funny and I could tell that they were getting into it. I loved how they were using their voices and yawning as they were really tired. I liked how they used the chair as a window sill.' Amelia
