Class 3 - Stone Age Trip

Yesterday, Class 3 took part in an action packed day of Stone Age related activities! It all began with a wobbly walk down to the field. The children found this (oddly) very exciting, especially when they were greeted with a large marquee and several Stone Age related objects (from paintings to a giant dried fungus)!

The children began by learning how to create the walls of a hut. The children have been learning about Skara Brae and the use of stone, however early man will have also made their homes out of wood and clay (or dung… the children were surprisingly disappointed to find out they would not be using dung). They started by stripping willow branches of leaves and hammering them into the ground. They then had to weave narrower pieces of willow to create the structure. Their favourite bit was likely digging up the clay and then moulding it with their hands. Every child took part in this even if some were a little hesitant!

After lunch, the children made small bread balls on the fire. They had to use their hands to mix the ingredients and an open fire to bake them. As you can see, they were a little on the well done side!

Another highlight of the day was the toasted marshmallows (though the children understood that this was a very modern treat)! They used their willow twigs to toast the marshmallows and then enjoyed all of their hard work.

After this, the children then made their own arrows to fire at targets. They had to use a peeler to strip the bark and then had the chance to name their arrows being firing them (anything from ‘Flying Magic’ to ‘Shocker’).

As ever, the children were excellent ambassadors for our school! They enjoyed the day thoroughly and we apologise for the mess! They have used this experience to inform their Big Writes this week.
